Great British Energy reaffirms support for the SSI and make SSI membership a requirement to bid for a new batch of £20 million funding for local energy projects

The Solar Stewardship Initiative (SSI) welcomes two significant developments from Great British Energy (GBE) that reinforce the importance of responsible sourcing and supply chain due diligence in the clean energy transition.

In a recent letter to Lord Alton of Liverpool, Chair of the Joint Committee on Human Rights, GBE publicly reaffirmed its commitment to working with the SSI as part of its approach to strengthening ethical supply chains. The letter recognises the value of multi-stakeholder initiatives in supporting due diligence, collaboration, and collective action to address forced labour risks across complex global supply chains.

GBE has also announced that suppliers for solar projects seeking support under its new £20 million Community Fund must use manufacturers that are members of the SSI, or demonstrate equivalent levels of ESG assurance. The fund is expected to support more than 1000 local and community-led clean energy projects across the UK.

Rachel Owens, CEO of the Solar Stewardship Initiative, said:

“We welcome Great British Energy’s continued commitment to responsible and ethical solar supply chains. By recognising the role of credible multi-stakeholder initiatives and incorporating SSI membership into its funding requirements, GBE is helping to strengthen transparency, due diligence and responsible sourcing across the sector in the UK.”
